Chinese Mint

Chinese Mint Background
China became the first nation to utilize paper currency. While this happened in the 9th century, the Chinese Mint actually wasn’t fully established until 1896. This makes the Chinese Mint younger than the US Mint, Royal Mint, and Mexican Mint. But, older than the Perth Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint.
Originally called the Centralized Mint, the Chinese Mint was founded during the Qing Dynasty. After the founding of the Chinese Mint, came the Duzhibu Printing Bureau in 1908. China’s first communist leader, Mao Tse Tung, then established the Shangjing Mint. These 2 facilities merged to create the China Banknote Printing and Minting Corporation.
The Chinese Mint is overseen by the People’s Bank of China and is under the control of the government of the People’s Republic of China. The Chinese Mint has branches in all parts of China, such as Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen.
Chinese Panda Series
The Chinese Mint has well over a century’s worth of history. However, by far their most well-known product is the Chinese Panda. This series was introduced in 1982 as the Gold Chinese Panda. Silver Chinese Pandas debuted the following year.
While Gold Pandas have been issued annually since they debuted, the release window for the silver coin program has been a little more sporadic. Silver coins were issued from 1983 to 1985 as proof specimens. After a break in 1986, they returned in 1987. After another break in 1988, they have been minted annually since 1989. Furthermore, these coins were issued in .900 fine silver for the first three years. Since 1987, they’ve been made with .999 silver.
Similar to most coin programs from the Perth Mint, these coins feature unique imagery of the panda with every new coin. The subject matter is always a panda; however, the exact image is unique to the year of issue. The only time the panda was the same was from 2001 to 2002.
Interestingly, the obverse for the gold coins has always been the Temple of Heaven complex. This same image has acted as the reverse for the silver coins. This means the image of the panda is considered the reverse for the gold coins, but the obverse for the silver coins.
These coins have undergone massive changes over the years. In 2001, Gold Pandas underwent a denomination change. However, both the silver and gold coins were transformed massively in 2016 when the decision was made to change the standard Troy oz to grams in order to line up with the metric system used in the country. For example, 1 oz coins are now 30 gram coins.
These coins are produced in many strike types. While BU coins are the most popular, proof, gilded, and colorized coins are also issued by the Chinese Mint.
