The Royal Mint
Among the most well-known mints in the world is the Royal Mint. Not only are they among the oldest mints in the world, but it is also one of the most popular via their array of interesting bullion coin programs. Background of the Royal Mint
The exact date the Royal Mint was established is unknown, although the Royal Mint uses 886 AD as its starting date. Regardless, the mint is approximately 1,100 years old. As the Royal Mint’s influence grew, so did the number of mints across Britain. However, by the 1270s, these mints were unified into one single system that was centralized in the Tower of London.
The London Mint was in operation for over 500 years until 1812 when the facility was moved to the Royal Mint Court. As demand grew, the mint transferred again to Llantrisant, Wales where it’s still headquartered to this day. Nowadays, the Royal Mint makes more than 3 billion coins and blanks a year.
British Britannia Coins
The official bullion coin of the country is the British Britannia. The series started with the Gold British Britannia in 1987. For the 10th anniversary, the Silver British Britannia was introduced, followed by the Platinum British Britannia in 2018.
Notably, silver and gold coins were made with a purity of .958 fine silver and .917 fine gold, respectively. In 2013, both coin programs were upgraded to .999 fine silver and .9999 fine gold. Even though the purity of both coins increased, the size of both decreased.
The obverse of these coins displays the reigning British monarch’s effigy. Over the years, this has included a few unique designs such as the following:
- 1987-1997: Raphael Maklouf’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the royal diadem.
- 1998-2015: Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II donning the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland diamond tiara.
- 2016-2023: Jody Clark’s depiction of Queen Elizabeth II.
- 2023-Present: King Charles III created by Martin Jennings.
The reverse has seen many iterations of Britannia over the years. However, the most well-known and the most commonly used is Phillip Nathan’s design. Britannia is seen standing on the coast, looking out to see. She’s holding a trident in one hand and the Union Jack shield in the other hand.
Queen’s Beasts
This 10-coin collection debuted in 2016 with a 2 oz silver BU coin. This marked the first time that the Royal Mint created a silver BU coin of this size. The popularity led to a 10 BU coin, various proof strikes, as well as gold and platinum coins in the series.
The series pays homage to Queen Elizabeth II and her lineage as during her coronation, ten statues formed a guard of honor. Each statue represents a part of her genealogy.

Tudor Beasts
Following the success of the Queen’s Beasts Series, the Royal Mint created the Tudor Beasts series celebrating the House of Tudor which ruled the throne from 1485 to 1603. Similar to the Queen’s Beasts Series, coins are issued in BU and proof strikes for gold, silver, and platinum.

British Sovereign
Modern Gold British Sovereigns were first struck in 1817 in an attempt to replace banknotes. The gold content in these coins fluctuated over time but now is consistently struck with 22-karat gold (91.67% gold).
The reigning British monarch is on the obverse while the reverse shows the iconic image of St. George slaying a dragon, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci. Coins can be purchased in flips, or tubes of 25 coins.

Another popular series is the Myths and Legends Series. The series debuted in 2021 with a unique release structure. Every coin issued is part of the Myths and Legends overall series, however, there are also mini-series in groups of 3. For example, the first 3 coins have the overarching theme of Robin Hood
