The United States Mint first released the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coin in 1907. It enjoyed over two decades of circulation until 1933 legislation discontinued the use of all gold currency, making it the last genuine gold $20 coin ever produced. It has since become one of the most highly sought after and revered pieces by both collectors and investors. Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ artwork for the double eagle coin is considered one of the most stunning designs that US currency has ever seen. On the coin’s obverse is Liberty, classically attired in a flowing toga. She holds a torch in one hand as a symbol of enlightenment and and an olive branch in the other one as a symbol of peace. She stands at the top of a mountain peak, which overlooks the Capitol building. Illuminating the area behind her are beams of sunlight. Saint-Gaudens frames his masterpiece with a border of 46 stars, representing each state at the time of the coin’s minting.
Showcased on the coin’s reverse is our national bird, the bald eagle, as it soars through the clear skies. The same beacons of light that were shown in the backdrop behind Liberty are present behind the eagle as well. The phrases, “United States of America” and “Twenty Dollars” are printed in an arched formation above the majestic bird. Also located at the bottom of the coin is the motto, “In God We Trust.” Please be advised, however, that the motto will only appear on coins that were minted after 1908.
