Gold Panda coins were released for the first time in 1982 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. The Chinese Mint added a 1/20 oz weight in 1983. The series continued with these five weights, as noted, through 2015. In 2016, the Chinese Mint switched to the use of Grams for its coins, with the 1/2 oz gold coin becoming the 15 Gram gold coin.
The obverse side of 1/2 oz Gold Pandas comes with the same depiction each year. Here, the exterior facade of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests is featured on the coins as viewed from the bottom of the stairs leading to the front door of the building. This Taoist religious building is the largest and most important structure within the Temple of Heaven Complex.
On the reverse of 1/2 oz Gold Chinese Pandas is a new image each year. The Giant Panda species, a species of bear native to the central highlands of China, features on the reverse each year in a new design. Some designs depict a family unit with a mother panda and her cub, while others may focus on either an adult panda or a young cub individually.
