The Colombian government first issued Gold 5 Peso Colombian Coins in 1880 after it adopted the gold standard. The 5 Peso coin was, eventually, the only denomination widely available in the Gold Peso Colombian Series. Starting in 1907, the Colombian government pegged the Gold 5 Peso coin to the British Sovereign at One Pound sterling to 5 Pesos, earning it the colloquial name of “Colombian Sovereign.” In 1931, the government pegged the coin to the gold-backed American dollar after the British Empire ended its use of the gold standard.
All of the Gold 5 Peso Colombian Coins in this product listing come to you with an individual plastic flip. The coins available here come from random years and are available in varied conditions. The coins you receive are chosen at our discretion once your payment has been processed. We are not able to hand-pick coins for a specific condition, design, or date mark.
Please note that these coins come largely from circulation and are bound to show some level of wear and tear from light scuffs or detracting flaws to heavy wear and tear. The most common date marks come from the 1918-1928 range when a new design was introduced, but broader date marks fall between 1880 and the 1930s. If you buy more than one, it is possible to get coins with the same date, design, and condition.
Obverse designs in the Gold 5 Peso Colombian Coin release feature two possible images. In one of those designs, a man is shown in right-profile relief chiseling away at a large stone. In the other image, a stylized portrait of Simon Bolivar is shown. General Bolivar led a massive war of independence in South America that eventually formed Gran Colombia under his command, a state that consisted of modern-day Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Panama.
Reverse features of the Gold 5 Peso Colombian Coins include the Colombian coat of arms. The emblem features an eagle perched on the stop of a shield with inscriptions of the coin’s weight in grams, metal purity, and face value.
