The United States Mint introduced the Platinum Eagles in 1997. The series initially included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum coins both the bullion and proof range. In 2008, all four bullion coins were suspended and the three fractional-ounce proof coins were suspended. The 1 oz Proof Platinum Eagle continued in production through this stoppage.
Bullion versions of the coin returned briefly in 2014 and for good in 2016, but only with the 1 oz weight available. The fractional-ounce proof versions of the coin never returned, making remaining fractional-ounce Proof Platinum Eagles are a popular item among investors looking for rarer platinum coins from the US Mint.
John Mercanti’s design of the Statue of Liberty is found on the obverse of all 1/4 oz Proof Platinum Eagles. Created in 1997, this design focuses on the shoulders, neckline, and face of the Statue of Liberty as she gazes out on the world.
Designs on the reverse of 1/4 oz Proof Platinum Eagles vary by year. Between 1997 and 2008, the US Mint used a different design each year with various artists contributing. Thomas D. Rogers contributed the debut 1997 design of an American eagle flying over the nation, the same design which still features on the reverse of bullion coins. He also contributed designs to the Vistas of Liberty series between 1998 and 2002.
These 1/4 oz Proof Platinum American Eagles are available to you with a PF70 certification. The NGC assigns PF70 grades to coins with full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. Ultra-cameo, or UCAM, coins have strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
