The Moscow Mint was the first to issue a modern bullion palladium coin when it introduced its Palladium Russian Ballerina coin series. Released from 1989 to 1995, the coins were available through the national transition from the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation. The series was unique in its use of new ballerina images on the obverse with each release.
Through the 1990s, the Royal Canadian Mint and Perth Mint joined the fray with palladium bullion coins. The Perth Mint issued one of its first palladium bullion coins in 1996 with the Emu design. The Palladium Canadian Maple Leaf was issued from 2005 to 2007, and most recently again in 2009. The newest series is the Palladium American Eagle that debuted in 2017.
Obverse and reverse designs for these coins will vary by the mint of origin. The Palladium Canadian Maple Leaf, for example, features the same design elements from the other bullion Maple Leaf coins. The sugar maple leaf is on the reverse and Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse.
