Silver South African Krugerrands from Silver.com
The first gold bullion coin issued for investors, the Gold South African Krugerrand was a symbol of the gold bullion industry for at least three decades. Introduced in 1967, the Krugerrand did not have any competitors until more than a decade later and would remain the most popular gold coin for sale until the 1990s. It took an economic boycott related to the politics of South Africa to put competitors on the same level. On the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrands release, the South African Mint and Rand Refinery finally introduced a silver bullion version of the popular coin. Now is your chance to learn more about the Silver South African Krugerrand.
The First-Ever Silver Krugerrand
When the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery introduced the first Silver Krugerrand, the coins were issued as part of the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand Series. The mint issued the first-ever Silver Krugerrand as a Premium Uncirculated coin. The specimens have the same designs on the obverse and reverse as the Gold Krugerrand coins. The coins were issued with a maximum mintage of only 1 million coins and came with a distinctive celebratory privy mark on the reverse field of the coins. Just above the hindquarters of the Springbok antelope, there is a 50th-anniversary privy mark. Though not intended as an annual-release coin, the popular reaction to the first-ever release of Silver Krugerrands resulted in the South African Mint and Rand Refinery opting to release the coins on an annual basis.
New Annual-Release Silver Krugerrands
Following the popular reception of the Premium Uncirculated Silver Krugerrand in 2017, the South African Mint and Rand Refinery began issuing annual-release Silver Krugerrands in 2018. The coins are still available to this day with two options. The Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Krugerrand is available without a mintage cap to ensure that investors can purchase the coins as a hedge against market fluctuations. Additionally, the Proof Silver Krugerrand has been available as of 2018. The primary visual difference between the BU and Proof Silver Krugerrand is the number of notches around the design element on both the obverse and reverse fields of the coin. The Proof Silver Krugerrand has more notches around its design field than the BU silver coin. On top of that, the Proof Silver Krugerrand has frosted design elements with mirrored background fields.
Packaging of Silver Krugerrands
When you purchase Silver South African Krugerrands, you will find that the BU Silver Krugerrand is available in individual and bulk packaging options, while the collectible proofs are packaged individually. The Silver Krugerrand ships individually inside of a protective plastic flip, with multiples offered in acrylic tubes of 25 coins and boxes of 500 coins. The box holds a total of 20 individual 25-coin tubes. For the Proof Silver Krugerrand, all coins are packaged with presentation boxes and include a Certificate of Authenticity.
Designs of the Silver South African Krugerrand
Though the introduction of the Silver Krugerrand was a critical moment in the history of the South African Krugerrand Series, it did not bring with it a new design element. Certain sovereign bullion coin programs, like the American Eagle Series at the US Mint, come with different designs on the obverse and reverse in each metal (gold, silver, platinum, and palladium). However, the Silver Krugerrand uses the same obverse and reverse designs as its gold counterpart. These include the following:
- On the obverse of the coin is a depiction of Paul Kruger. Fondly referred to as Oom Paul, or Uncle Paul, Kruger was the first person elected President of the South African Republic. He ascended to the position following the movement for independence and the rule of the triumvirate in South Africa, the latter of which he was a member. This left-profile bust of Kruger was first used on the gold coins of the South African pound in the 1890s and was last updated for the Krugerrand Series in 1984.
- The reverse field of the coin comes with an image of Springbok antelope. Another historic design from the South African Mint, the Springbok antelope first featured on South African coins in the first few decades of the 20th century. Similarly, the design currently found on the coins was modified in 1984.
Most importantly, the Silver Krugerrand comes with a noted face value of 1 Rand. While Gold Krugerrands are legal tender coins in South Africa, only the Silver Krugerrand has an engraved face value.
