GSA Silver Morgan Dollars are highly coveted by collectors. The discovery of millions of Silver Morgan Dollars in US Treasury vaults in the 1960s changed the landscape for collectors, making some coins once considered rare more available to collectors. The stash of coins was audited by the Government Services Administration, then packaged and auctioned off to collectors through public auctions. The US Treasury announced in the 1960s that it had found some $3 million worth of uncirculated Silver Morgan Dollars in its vaults. The GSA audited the stash of coins in the aftermath, discovering that 95% of the coins were still in uncirculated condition Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint. It noted the number of Morgan Dollars from various dates at the Carson City Mint and found coins from 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1890, and 1891 in the stash, each with varying levels present. The coins from the 1880s were particularly notable for large volumes representing a major percentage of the original mintages from the 1880s.
