Silver Chinese Panda Coins at Silver.com
The Silver Chinese Panda Series is a series of silver bullion coins that are issued regularly by the Chinese Mint. This series has a lot of history and uniqueness about it. With so much to learn about these silver coins, you can learn more about them right here at Silver.com.
Series History
Gold Chinese Pandas debuted in 1982, with silver coins being introduced the following year. Silver coins were issued every year from 1983 to 1985 but were proof strikes made with 90% silver.
The silver series took a year break, then returned in 1987 with coins now being made from 99.99% silver. The Chinese Mint once again didn’t mint these in 1988 but revived them again in 1989. These coins have been issued annually since then.
The series is unique in that the design of the panda changes annually. Every year the obverse shows the image of a panda, however, the exact image shown has changed every year. The lone exception comes in 2001 and 2002 where the same design was featured.
In 2016, the coin program underwent a massive change. While almost every major coin program is issued in Troy oz weights, the Chinese Mint made the decision to change to the metric system and thus issue coins in gram sizes. The 1 Troy oz coin was changed to 30 grams (0.9646 Troy oz).
Nowadays, these coins are regularly issued in the 30 gram size, as well as 150 grams (4.8227 Troy oz) and 1 kilogram (32.1507 Troy oz).
Design
As mentioned above, the obverse of these coins changes every year. The only elements that are consistent are the panda motif, as well as inscriptions displaying the face value, metal content, and metal purity.
The reverse of these coins has remained the same since the inception of the coin program. Each year’s issue showcases the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, located in the Temple of Heaven. The complex is shown in the middle, while the year of issue is displayed at the bottom, plus the Chinese inscription for “The People’s Republic of China” up top.
Interestingly, the gold coin program has the designs flipped. The reverse shows a panda while the obverse displays the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.
Unique Strikes
This series releases coins in various different strikes. The Chinese Mint creates these coins in proof strikes, colorized, and gilded variations. Colorized coins have a colorized lacquer on the reverse, while gilded coins will have a thin layer of 24-karat gold on the reverse.
