Gold Canadian Maple Leafs
The most popular gold coin from the RCM, and among the most popular in the world, is the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf. These coins are the official gold bullion coins of Canada and were originally introduced in 1979 as the first main competition to the Gold South African Krugerrand, which debuted over a decade prior.
These coins are named for their reverse design which displays a sugar maple leaf design by Walter Ott. The obverse of these coins always showcases the portrait of the reigning British monarch. Over the years, this has included several unique designs such as the following:
- 1979-1989: Queen Elizabeth II – designed by Arnold Machin.
- 1990-2004: Queen Elizabeth II – created by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
- 2005-2023: Queen Elizabeth II – produced by Susanna Blunt.
- 2024 – Present: King Charles III – made by Steven Rosati.
The series initially released coins with a purity of .999 pure silver. In November of 1982, the series became the first to start issuing gold coins with a content of .9999 pure gold. Gold coins are issued in several unique sizes, with different face values, such as the following:
- 1 Troy oz: $50 (CAD)
- 1/2 Troy oz: $20 (CAD)
- 1/4 Troy oz: $10 (CAD)
- 1/10 Troy oz: $5 (CAD)
- 1/20 Troy oz: $1 (CAD)
- 1 Gram (.03215 Troy oz): $0.50 (CAD)
Notably, a 1/15 Troy oz option was introduced for one year only in 1994 for the 15th anniversary of the series.
The RCM is also known for including unique security features on these coins. In 2013, the RCM added a micro-engraved maple leaf to the reverse. This additional maple leaf has the year of issue inscribed on it which can be viewed under magnification. In 2015, the mint added radial lines to both the obverse and the reverse.
These coins are available in BU condition in individual plastic flips, tubes of 10 coins, or mint-sealed boxes of 500. Other options for these coins include single-source coins, which are made with gold from a single source. These coins arrive in a sealed assay card. Another option is the MintID packaging which includes AES-128 encryption in its packaging.
Animal Portrait Series
A recent addition to RCM’s collection is their array of Animal Portrait coins. This series debuted in 2017 with each release depicting a new portrait of an animal. These coins are reverse proof strikes made with 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold. Designs in the series feature the following animals.
- 2017: Bighorn Sheep
- 2018: Wolverine
- 2019: Mustang
- 2020: Woodland Caribou
- 2021: Great Horned Owl
- 2022: Moose
- 2023: Lynx
The obverse of these coins showcases Susanna Blunt’s design of Queen Elizabeth II.
Call of the Wild Series
This RCM coin program was introduced in 2014. While the Animal Portrait Series showcases portraits of animals, the Call of the Wild Series displays unique wildlife found in North America on each release. What makes this series unique is that each coin is made with a purity of .99999 pure gold.
Designs in the series feature the following animals:
- 2014: Howling Wolf
- 2015: Growling Cougar
- 2016: Roaring Grizzly
- 2017: Crowned Elk
- 2018: Golden Eagle
- 2019: Moose
- 2020: Hissing Bobcat
These coins are 1 Troy oz in size and arrive in sealed assay cards. Susanna Blunt’s design of the Queen is shown on the obverse.
Other Gold Canadian Coins
- Canadian Commemorative Coins: Similar to the US Mint, the RCM sporadically issued commemorative coins to celebrate events, people, and anniversaries. Popular options include $200 Maple Leafs and First Special Service Force Coins.
- Klondike Gold Rush: Annual release of coins featuring unique images revolving around the gold rush. This series debuted in 2021.
- Polar Bear: This coin program issues coins annually showcasing unique images of a polar bear on the reverse.
