Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is among the world’s most popular and recognizable mints. Established in 1908, the RCM now has two state-of-the-art locations and is at the forefront of creating innovative and one-of-a-kind bullion products. They’ve even embraced .99999 gold coins as well as platinum and palladium in their coinage. Learn more about the Royal Canadian Mint, right here at Silver.com.
History of the Royal Canadian Mint
The RCM was established in 1908 as a branch of the British Royal Mint. Prior to this, all Canadian coinage was struck at the Royal Mint in London. The first coin struck was a fifty-cent coin by Governor General Earl Grey. The first location was in Ottawa and needed to turn gold into coinage. After two decades, the mint was transferred to the Canadian government in 1931.
By 1960, it was proposed that the RCM needed a new facility. Several coins were struck at either the Philadelphia Mint or in Quebec as the Ottawa Mint was now outdated. It was decided that the second branch of the RCM would be built in Winnipeg, and it was opened in 1976.
The RCM really became a household name with the introduction of the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf. This coin was the world’s second gold bullion coin, following the Gold South African Krugerrand. Notably, these coins beginning in 1983 were made with .9999 fine gold.
Furthermore, in 2007 the RCM made history as they set a Guinness World Record for making the largest coin in the world. The coin was a 100 kg Gold Maple Leaf made from .99999 fine gold with a face value of $1 million (CAD).
Today, the Winnipeg facility creates Canadian circulation coinage, while the Ottawa facility produces numismatics.
Canadian Maple Leaf Series
As mentioned above, the RCM is renowned for its Canadian Maple Leaf Series. This coin program debuted in 1979 with a gold coin and is the country’s official bullion coin. In 1988, the mint debuted a silver coin and a platinum coin in the series, followed by a palladium coin in 2005.
The series is named for its reverse design, which has gone unchanged since its debut in 1979. The reverse showcases Walter Ott’s sugar maple leaf, surrounded by identifying marks of the coin.
The obverse of these coins shows the effigy of the reigning British monarch, Over the years this has included the following designs:
- 1979-1989: Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 39, designed by Arnold Machin.
- 1990-2003: Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 64, created by Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
- 2004-2023: Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 79, designed by Susanna Blunt.
- 2024-Present: King Charles III, created by Steven Rosati.
Gold coins are issued in sizes such as 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and 1 gram. Silver, platinum, and palladium coins are issued in a 1 oz size.
Notably, the RCM uses advanced security features on these coins such as micro-engraving as well as radial lines to make them among the most secure bullion coins on the market.
Animal Portrait Series
This series debuted in 2017 and features portraits of animals found in North America. The series releases coins in both gold and silver with silver coins being made from 3/4 Troy oz of .9999 fine silver and gold coins being made from 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 fine gold.
Each coin is also a reverse proof strike. While the obverse shows the reigning British monarch, the reverse features a new portrait annually.
- 2017: Bighorn Sheep
- 2018: Wolverine
- 2019: Wild Horse
- 2020: Woodland Caribou
- 2021: Great Horned Owl
- 2022: Moose
- 2023: Lynx
Ice Age Series
Another popular coin program from the RCM is the Ice Age Series. This coin program just recently debuted in 2023 releasing 2 Troy oz coins made from .9999 fine silver.
The first issue came in 2023 and featured the Smilodon Sabre-Tooth Tiger. 2024 saw the release of the second coin in the series, the Woolly Mammoth.
Bullion Bars
The RCM also produces high-quality bullion bars. Gold and silver bars are created in several unique sizes, primarily as either a minted ingot or a cast bar. Bars are typically made with a purity of either .9999 fine gold or .9999 fine silver.
