Silver Maple Leaf Coins
The RCM is well-known for its iconic Silver Maple Leaf Series. The Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Series debuted in 1979 and was the world’s second bullion gold coin, following the Gold South African Krugerrand. Less than a decade later, the RCM introduced the silver version.
The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf was introduced in 1988 as the world’s first .9999 fine silver coin. Coins are made from 1 Troy oz of .9999 silver and have a face value of $5 (CAD). Coins have been issued annually every year since their debut. These coins are named after their reverse design, which has remained unchanged since it debuted in 1979 for the gold coin.
The reverse features a sugar maple leaf design by Walter Ott. The maple leaf is seen in the center of the design field and is surrounded by identifying marks of the coin. The obverse of these coins features the reigning British monarch. Over the years that has included many different designs, such as the following:
- 1988-1989: Arnold Machin’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
- 1990-2003: Dora de Pédery-Hunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
- 2004-2023: Susanna Blunt’s design of Queen Elizabeth II.
- 2024-Present: Steven Rosati’s image of King Charles III.
The RCM also occasionally releases coins in this series with special privy marks. These privy marks will celebrate big events, anniversaries, or even commemorate the lunar calendar.
