Silver Canadian Maple Leafs at Silver.com
The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is one the most popular silver coins on the market today. These coins have been struck annually by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) since 1988. These coins were the first silver bullion coins in the world to have a purity of at least .9999 silver. While the RCM has several popular coin programs, the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is their most popular. Learn more about these coins right here, at Silver.com.
Design of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf
These coins are named after the reverse field design, the sugar maple leaf by Walter Ott. This design was created in 1979 for the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf and has been featured on every iteration of the gold and silver coin. The sugar maple leaf appears front and center on the reverse with identifying marks of the coin (nation of issue, metal content, and purity) surrounds the design.
The obverse of these coins showcases the portrait of the reigning British monarch. Over the years, this has included several unique designs.
- 1988-1989: Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II at age 39.
- 1990-2003: Dora de Pédery-Hunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II at age 64.
- 2004-2023: Susanna Blunt’s design of Queen Elizabeth II at age 79.
- 2024-Present: Steven Rosati’s image of King Charles II.
Security Features
With the release of the 2014 Silver Canadian Maple Leaf, the RCM included several new security features. Among these security features are radial lines on both the obverse and reverse sides. These lines were included as they reflect light, allowing for the counterfeiting of these coins to be more difficult. Also featured on the reverse is a micro-engraved privy mark to the bottom right of the sugar maple leaf. These features are now present in every new issue of these coins.
Popular Variations of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf
Silver Canadian Maple Leafs are released in a 1 oz weight made with .9999 fine silver and a face value of $5 (CAD). However, there are several unique variations of these coins as well.
- Colorized: The RCM releases colorized coins that have a colorized lacquer applied to the sugar maple leaf design.
- Gilded: These coins have a thin layer of 24-karat gold applied to the sugar maple leaf design.
- Leaves in Motion: These 5 oz coins have been issued annually since 2017. These coins are proof strikes and feature a unique reverse design as well as a background and technique with each release.
- Privy: The RCM will occasionally release these coins with unique privy marks to celebrate anniversaries or occasions.
The RCM also releases bigger sizes of the Silver Maple Leaf Coins as collector’s items. In 2019 they released a 10 oz coin while in 2023 a 1 kilo coin was issued.
Packaging
These coins are available in many different packaging options. Singular BU coins are available in protective plastic flips. For larger orders, these coins can be purchased in tubes of 25, or Monster Boxes of 500. The boxes contain 20 tubes.
